Sagay attended King’s College, Lagos, before proceeding to the University of Ibadan, where he obtained a Bachelor of Law degree in 1967. He rounded off his legal education at the prestigious Downing College, Cambridge, where he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Law.

Career

In his early legal career, Professor Sagay worked as a Lecturer in the Faculty of Law at the University of Benin. His quest for social justice and good governance inspired his engagement in pro-democracy activities, which earned him the label of an activist. He was a key figure in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), the umbrella body of pro-democracy groups, which played an instrumental role in the restoration of democracy in Nigeria in 1999.
